We see images all the time now. On phones, screens, prints, posters, social media and websites. Most of them disappear after a few seconds.
An original oil painting works differently.
It is not only an image. It is a physical object. It has surface, texture, edges, scale and weight. You can see where the paint was placed, changed, scraped, softened or left alone. Even a small oil painting carries the time of its making.
That is why an original painting feels different from a print. A print can be decorative, but it repeats an image. An original painting exists only once. It has its own surface, its own marks and its own presence in a room.
For me, this matters most in landscape painting. A field, a street, a river, a winter sky or a view from Sardinia becomes more than a scene when it is painted by hand. The painting keeps something of the place, but also something of the moment of looking.
Oil paint is important because it catches light in a particular way. The surface changes slightly during the day. A darker painting may feel quiet in the morning and stronger in the evening. A small landscape can become a point of stillness in a room.
This is also why I think original paintings are worth living with. They do not have to dominate an interior. Sometimes a small work on a shelf, above a desk, in a hallway or beside other objects can change the atmosphere of a space.
An original oil painting is not mass-produced. It is not a file, a poster or a decoration made in thousands of copies. It is a hand-painted object, made slowly, with all the decisions and imperfections that belong to painting.
