Description
Under the Tuscan Moon is a large original Tuscan hills oil painting by Andrea Bocedi, inspired by a view near Bellavista, close to Montalcino and Abbazia Sant’Antimo in Tuscany.
This is not a postcard version of Tuscany. The painting focuses on the quiet moment between night and morning, when the moon is still visible and the hills slowly begin to appear in the first light of day. The subject is real, but the painting is less about documentation and more about atmosphere, memory and the emotional presence of place.
A larger Tuscan landscape oil painting with a calm, atmospheric presence. Suitable for collectors looking for an original Italian landscape painting, a Montalcino oil painting, or a work connected with Tuscany, light and memory of place.
Story of the Place
The painting was inspired by a view seen near Bellavista, not far from Montalcino and Abbazia Sant’Antimo. This part of Tuscany has a very particular silence: hills, fields, distant ridges, old roads and soft light that changes before the day fully arrives.
What interested me was not the obvious Tuscan cliché of villas, cypress roads and perfect tourist views. This view was quieter. The hills themselves became the subject: their rhythm, softened edges, muted colour and the way early light moved across the landscape.
The moon remained important in the final painting. It keeps the image suspended between night and morning, between observation and memory. That is where the title Under the Tuscan Moon came from — a small echo of Under the Tuscan Sun, but turned into something slower, cooler and more intimate.
About the Painting
This painting was made later in the studio from a photograph taken during travel in Tuscany. The photograph gave the structure of the place, but the painting was built through colour, memory and interpretation.
The landscape is broad and open, with rolling hills moving across the surface of the canvas. The colour is muted but intense: greens, blues, warm earth tones and pale light. The surface carries visible brushwork and layered oil paint, giving the work a physical presence that cannot be reproduced in a print.
At 57 × 77 cm, Under the Tuscan Moon is larger than many of my small plein air studies. The format gives the hills enough space to unfold and creates a more immersive atmosphere — less like a sketch of a place and more like a landscape you can enter.
For Collectors
This original oil painting may appeal to collectors looking for:
- an original Tuscan landscape oil painting,
- a large oil painting inspired by Montalcino,
- Italian landscape art with atmosphere and emotional depth,
- a one of a kind oil painting rather than a print or reproduction,
- a work connected with travel, memory, silence and early morning light.
Although the subject is Tuscany, the painting is not simply decorative travel art. It belongs to my ongoing body of work about light, landscape and memory of place — paintings where the location is real, but the final image is shaped by time, recollection and the physical language of oil paint.
