Beehives is an original oil painting by Andrea Bocedi based on
a group of historic wooden beehives preserved at Muzeum Wsi Lubelskiej
in Lublin.
Created in the studio, the painting does not present the museum as a
carefully documented architectural display. Instead, the old structures,
tree trunks and branches are organised into a compact composition built
through rhythm, silhouette and colour.
Historic beehives beneath an old tree
The central hive forms the visual anchor of the painting. Its dark wooden
body stands directly beneath the largest branches, joining the built
structure with the organic form of the tree behind it.
Smaller beehives placed on either side create an irregular rhythm across
the scene. Each has a different proportion, roofline and colour, giving
the group the character of a small village gathered beneath the tree.
The wide network of branches fills the upper part of the painting like a
dark canopy. Between them, passages of pale blue sky bring air into the
composition and prevent the strong silhouettes from becoming visually
heavy.
The old beehives appear almost like miniature wooden houses, each with
its own shape, colour and personality, gathered beneath the shelter of
the tree.
Rhythm and asymmetrical balance
The largest hive and tree trunk hold the centre, while the smaller
structures extend the composition toward both edges. The bright
yellow-and-blue hive on the right balances the deeper reds and browns
on the left.
Colour against dark silhouettes
Dark branches and wooden walls are set against blue sky, fresh green
grass and small passages of yellow, turquoise and red. These accents
give the historic subject a vivid, contemporary energy.
Polish rural architecture transformed through paint
The historic beehives belong to the material culture of the Polish
countryside, but the painting is not intended as a neutral museum
illustration.
Visible brushwork, simplified construction and strong colour contrasts
transform the motif into an expressive arrangement of roofs, branches,
wooden walls and open sky.
At 24 × 30 cm, the painting is compact enough for a study, hallway,
bedroom or grouped display of smaller original works. Its distinctive
subject also makes it suitable for collectors interested in folk
