Description

Cypress Tree Alley – Original Tuscan Cypress Oil Painting Painted en Plein Air

Cypress Tree Alley is an original oil painting by Andrea Bocedi, painted en plein air in Castel Spedaletto, near Pienza in Tuscany. The work captures a sunlit path lined with tall dark cypress trees, coloured shadows and a wall of red flowers glowing in the light.

This painting belongs to the long tradition of Tuscan cypress tree paintings, but it is not a decorative postcard view. Painted directly outdoors, it focuses on the immediate experience of light, heat, colour and rhythm: the vertical movement of the cypress trees, the diagonal pull of the path, the violet-blue shadows and the warm Mediterranean sunlight.

The dark cypress forms create a strong contrast with the pale road and flowering wall, giving the painting both structure and atmosphere. Rather than describing every detail, the brushwork simplifies the landscape into painterly masses of green, violet, pink, cream and blue. The result is a small but vivid Tuscan landscape oil painting with a strong sense of place.

Painted in oil on canvas board and presented in a frame, this 21 × 30 cm original artwork is a one-of-a-kind plein air painting for collectors looking for a small original oil painting, a Tuscany painting, a cypress tree oil painting, or an Italian landscape artwork with expressive colour and direct outdoor observation.

A plein air painting of cypress trees in Tuscany

Cypress trees are one of the most recognisable motifs of the Tuscan landscape, but in this painting they are treated less as symbols and more as living vertical forms. Their dark silhouettes divide the light, shape the path and create the rhythm of the composition.

The painting was created outdoors, which gives it a direct and immediate character. The colours were chosen under changing natural light, and the brushwork keeps the pressure of the moment: quick decisions, simplified shapes and visible texture. This is what makes plein air paintings different from studio reconstructions — they carry the trace of a specific time and place.

Why this painting may speak to collectors

Cypress Tree Alley may appeal to collectors who are drawn to original Tuscan landscape paintings, Mediterranean garden scenes, cypress tree paintings, small plein air works and Italian oil paintings with atmosphere. Its format makes it suitable for intimate interiors, shelves, desks, small walls or as part of a larger collection of original landscape paintings.

This is not a print, not a digital reproduction and not AI-generated art. It is a signed original oil painting with visible brushwork, surface texture and the character of a real object.

Studio note

What interested me most in this painting was the contrast between the dark, almost architectural cypress trees and the coloured light falling across the path. The shadows are not neutral grey; they shift through violet, blue and lavender, while the road holds warm notes of cream, pink and pale yellow. This colour contrast became the emotional centre of the work.

The painting was made in Castel Spedaletto, close to Pienza, during a plein air session in Tuscany. The place offered exactly the kind of motif I look for: a simple path, strong sunlight, vertical trees, flowers, shadow and a feeling of quiet Mediterranean space.
