Description

Original Sardinian landscape painting

Nuracu d’Izzana is an original oil painting inspired by
Nuraghe Izzana in Gallura, northern Sardinia. The ancient granite
structure stands within a sun-burnt agricultural landscape, surrounded
by pale stones, dry pasture and distant mountains.

Nuraghe Izzana in the Landscape of Gallura

This painting does not present Nuraghe Izzana as an isolated archaeological
monument. The structure remains part of a working rural landscape. Farm
tracks, open ground and ordinary agricultural life continue around stonework
created thousands of years ago.

That meeting between the ancient and the everyday became the central idea
of the painting. The nuraghe acts as a bridge from the Bronze Age to the
present, but without theatrical effects. It is heavy, silent and firmly
connected to the same granite earth as the rocks scattered across the plain.

The mystery of Nuraghe Izzana comes from its continued presence:
an ancient structure standing not outside ordinary life, but directly
inside it.

Painted from Photographs and Experience of the Place

Nuracu d’Izzana was created in the studio using my own photographs
and recollection of visiting the location. The reference material provided
the essential forms, but the finished painting was not intended as a literal
copy of a photograph.

The distant mountains were simplified, the pale sky was reduced almost to a
bleached band of light, and the surrounding landscape was opened to give the
nuraghe space and weight. The elongated 20 × 40 cm format allows the building
to remain the main subject without separating it from the plain.

The restrained palette reflects the severity of inland Gallura: dusty earth,
muted olive, violet-grey shadow, warm ochre and chalky granite. Instead of a
bright Mediterranean postcard, the painting concentrates on heat, silence,
age and the physical roughness of the land.

Granite, Dark Entrances and Painterly Surface

The stone structure was built with broken marks rather than carefully
describing every individual block. Cool greys, brown-violets, olive tones
and warmer passages overlap across the surface, allowing the nuraghe to feel
both architectural and geological.

The two dark openings provide the strongest accents in the composition.
They suggest the depth of the interior while leaving it unexplained. Around
them, thicker paint catches the irregular rhythm of granite, dry vegetation
and earth.

The aim was painterly truth rather than archaeological illustration:
the weight of the structure, the temperature of the stone and the atmosphere
of the exposed Gallura landscape.
