Description
Original Tuscan architecture oil painting
A facade built from light, shadow and old Tuscan surfaces
Osteria Facade is a large panoramic oil painting inspired
by the facade of Osteria Sette di Vino in Pienza, Tuscany.
Pale plaster, dark wooden doors, shutters, flower boxes and climbing
plants form a quiet architectural rhythm across the wide canvas.

Osteria Sette di Vino in Pienza
The subject is a real facade in Pienza, one of the Tuscan places
that has remained important in my painting. What interested me here
was not a broad view across the Val d’Orcia, but something much
narrower: an old wall organised by three entrances, dark shutters,
flower boxes and small irregular traces left on the plaster.
The central arched doorway became the visual anchor of the
composition. Its deep brown and near-black values sit against the
much lighter wall, while the flowers and vegetation introduce small
passages of red, pink and green across an otherwise restrained
palette.
I did not want to turn the building into a precise architectural
illustration. Details are simplified, edges remain painterly and
parts of the wall are allowed to dissolve into brushwork. The
facade stays recognisable, but the painting is ultimately about
relationships of light, shape, surface and colour.
The composition
The unusual 15.7 × 35.4 in (40 × 90 cm) format allowed the
facade to become almost a landscape in itself — a long
horizontal field of warm plaster interrupted by doors,
shutters, flowers and shadow.
A panoramic architectural painting
Most architectural paintings naturally become vertical or compact.
Here the long horizontal proportion changes the way the building is
read. The eye moves from one doorway to the next, through repeated
dark shapes, hanging flowers and patches of worn wall.
The facade is broad enough to feel substantial without becoming
visually heavy. The light plaster acts as a large quiet area,
allowing the darker doors and central arch to carry the structure
of the painting.
Warm Tuscan surface
Cream, ochre and muted earth tones create the large field of
sunlit plaster, broken by cooler grey passages and traces of
age.
Deep architectural shadow
Dark wooden doors, shutters and the central arch give the
painting its structure and prevent the pale facade from
becoming decorative or weightless.
Small colour accents
Geraniums, flower boxes and climbing plants introduce restrained
reds, pinks and greens without competing with the architecture.
One painting, one physical surface
Osteria Facade is a one-of-a-kind original oil
painting. It is not a print, reproduction or edition. The
brushwork, changes in opacity, small irregularities and surface
texture visible in the detail photographs belong to this
individual canvas.
The painting is signed by Andrea Bocedi and supplied with a
