Description
Original plein air oil painting
Sunlight moving through the clouds
Backlit Clouds is an original plein air oil painting
created outdoors while observing rapidly changing clouds illuminated from
behind by the sun. Broad, direct brushwork captures the contrast between
bright cloud edges, cooler shadows and open blue sky.
Compact original landscape format
Linen canvas mounted on a rigid board
Created directly from observation
A plein air study of sky, light and movement
Clouds rarely remain still long enough to be carefully described. Their
shapes expand, dissolve and reorganise continually, while changing light
transforms their colour and apparent weight. This painting was made in
response to that movement rather than as a detailed illustration of a
fixed moment.
The composition is built almost entirely from sky. Pale, sunlit passages
emerge against cooler blue and grey areas, while visible brushstrokes give
the clouds a physical, shifting presence. The small format encouraged a
direct approach, with decisions made quickly as the light changed.
Instead of treating clouds as a background element, the painting makes
them the complete subject. Their scale, rhythm and reflected light create
a landscape without the need for a visible horizon.
Painterly surface
Visible oil-paint strokes describe the changing structure of the clouds,
from soft atmospheric passages to thicker accents of reflected sunlight.
Original, one-of-a-kind artwork
This is the physical oil painting created by Andrea Bocedi, not a print,
digital reproduction or AI-generated image.
The painting forms part of Andrea Bocedi’s continuing practice of working
directly outdoors, where changing weather and natural light influence both
the composition and the handling of paint.
