Description

Original hand-painted master study

A one-of-a-kind oil portrait study painted by Andrea Bocedi after
Joaquín Sorolla’s Bebedor vasco. Rather than reproducing the
complete composition, this work isolates the sitter’s face and explores
Sorolla’s direct handling of light, flesh colour and strong tonal
contrasts.

Painted by Andrea Bocedi as an independent study after a public-domain
work by Joaquín Sorolla. This artwork is not an original painting by
Sorolla and is not an official museum reproduction.

After Sorolla
Contemporary master study
This painting concentrates on one of the strongest elements in
Bebedor vasco: the sitter’s severe, closely observed face.
Cropping the original composition allowed me to treat the head almost as
a complete landscape of colour, edge and changing temperature.Warm reds and ochres dominate the illuminated side of the face, while
deeper violet-browns and near-black passages structure the shadow. Thick
highlights remain visible around the forehead and eyes, preserving the
physical surface of the oil paint.

A portrait built through colour and value

Sorolla’s portraits often appear effortless, but their freedom depends on
an exact understanding of value, colour temperature and structure.
Painting this study required separating the face into a limited number
of large, readable masses before adding smaller accents.

The dark beret creates a heavy shape above the head, while the face is
divided by a strong diagonal transition between light and shadow.
Individual details were deliberately subordinated to the larger tonal
design.

The resulting work is not intended as a mechanically faithful museum
reproduction. It retains the source of inspiration while also carrying
my own heavier contrasts, simplified forms and more angular handling of
the face.

The purpose of a master study is not simply to copy an image. It is to
understand how another painter organised light, colour and form — and
then to rebuild those relationships by hand.

Visible oil-paint surface

This is a physical oil painting with visible brushstrokes and varied
paint thickness. Small changes in room lighting reveal the directional
marks in the beret, the raised highlights on the forehead and the more
broken handling around the eyes and background.

Scale and presence in the studio

At 25 × 30 cm, the painting is intimate but not miniature. The close crop
gives the head considerable visual weight, allowing the work to function
strongly on a small wall, shelf, cabinet or as part of a group of
figurative paintings.

What makes this different from a printed reproduction?

A single painted object

This is one original oil study, not a print, canvas transfer or
digitally reproduced edition. Every mark, edge and variation in the
paint surface belongs to this individual object.

A contemporary interpretation

The work acknowledges Joaquín Sorolla as the source while remaining
clearly identified as a study painted by Andrea Bocedi. It is not
presented as an original Sorolla or an official replica.

placement of warm and cool colour, economy of detail and control of
visible brushwork.
