Rena Majore is known for its meeting of pale granite, Mediterranean
vegetation and intensely coloured water. In this painting, the landscape
is reduced to its essential contrasts: warm rock against cooler sea,
bright sunlight against deeper coastal shadows, and solid forms against
an open horizon.
Rather than describing every stone in detail, the painting concentrates
on the overall sensation of the place. Broad passages of colour establish
the shoreline, while smaller accents animate the rocks and the surface of
the water. The result is direct and painterly without losing the
recognisable character of Rena Majore.
The horizontal composition gives the scene a calm sense of distance. Its
restrained scale makes it suitable for an intimate interior, a small
