The eyes matter most
In a dog portrait, the eyes are usually the emotional centre of the painting. They carry attention, character and recognition. A good reference photo should show the eyes clearly, without heavy blur, strong shadow or flash reflection.
The painting does not have to copy the photo mechanically, but the eyes help the artist understand the dog’s personality — alert, gentle, serious, playful, proud, sleepy or curious.
Natural light is usually better than flash
The best photo for a custom dog portrait is often taken in soft natural light. A photo taken near a window, outdoors in shade, or on a cloudy day can show the shape of the head, fur colour and expression much better than a harsh flash photo.
Strong flash can flatten the face, create unnatural highlights in the eyes and change the colour of the fur. Natural light gives a more believable base for an oil painting.
Choose a photo that shows your dog’s character
A technically sharp photo is useful, but character is even more important. If your dog has a particular look, posture or expression that feels truly “them”, that photo may be the best starting point.
Some dogs look best sitting proudly. Others feel more natural lying down, looking to the side, or staring directly at the camera. A good portrait should not only show what the dog looks like — it should suggest who the dog is.
Send more than one photo if you can
You do not need to choose only one image immediately. Sending several photos can help the artist understand the dog better: the shape of the head, the colour of the coat, the markings, the eyes and the general character.
One photo can be used as the main pose, while others can help with colour, details or expression. This is especially useful if the main photo is beautiful but slightly dark, old or imperfect.
What makes a photo difficult to paint?
Some photos are harder to use as references. Very blurry images, extreme filters, strong artificial light, heavy shadows, very low resolution, or photos where the dog’s face is too small can make the portrait more difficult.
A photo does not have to be perfect, but the artist needs enough information to see the structure of the dog’s face, the direction of the light and the important markings.
Can an old or imperfect photo still work?
Yes, sometimes it can. This is especially important for memorial dog portraits, where the best available photo may be old, small or not technically ideal. In that case, additional photos can help a lot, even if they are not beautiful by themselves.
If you are not sure whether your photo is good enough, you can send it first and ask. In many cases, a painting can still be created from a combination of available references.
From photo to original oil painting

I use the reference photo to understand the dog, but the aim is not to produce a cold copy. The painting should feel warmer, more atmospheric and more lasting than another image on a screen.
