Smaller formats suit intimate head-and-shoulders portraits; larger canvases allow more space for full-body poses and elaborate scenes.

Painting two or more animals requires additional planning and enough space for each animal to remain recognisable.
Background and detail
A simple, softly painted background is different from a detailed garden, interior or landscape.
