Cat Portraits as Gifts

A custom cat portrait can work equally well as a gift.

The best reference photograph does not necessarily need to be formal. A natural pose, expression or characteristic body language may tell me much more about the cat than a technically perfect photograph.

If possible, send several images so I can compare them before recommending a composition.

Can Other Animals Be Painted as a Gift?

Yes. I am open to commissions involving other animals when suitable photographs are available.

Depending on the reference material, this can include horses and other companion or domestic animals.

The photograph is one of the most important decisions in a portrait commission.

A useful reference should give me enough information about the animal’s expression, proportions, colouring and character.

You do not need a professional studio photograph.

What Size Pet Portrait Should I Give as a Gift?

This depends on the number of animals, composition and where you expect the painting to be displayed.

A smaller format can work extremely well for one close portrait, while several pets or a landscape setting usually benefit from more space.

How Much Does a Custom Pet Portrait Gift Cost?

My smaller custom oil pet portraits currently start at approximately $250 / €230.

The final cost depends mainly on the canvas size, number of animals and complexity of the composition.

How Early Should I Order a Pet Portrait for Christmas or a Birthday?

As early as reasonably possible.

A traditional oil painting requires not only painting time but also sufficient drying time before it can be packed safely.

My commission schedule can also vary throughout the year.

Can You Paint a Pet That Has Passed Away?

Often, yes.

Older photographs can frequently be used for a memorial commission, particularly when several images of the same animal are available.

If the portrait is intended as a memorial gift, send me all the photographs you can find. I can assess which references contain enough useful information.

Can You Change the Background?

In many cases, yes.

Distracting objects can sometimes be simplified or removed, and a different surrounding environment may be possible when suitable reference material exists.

The final composition is discussed before I begin the painting.

Is It an Original Painting or a Print?

For me, the photograph is the starting point rather than the finished product. I interpret the animal through composition, colour, light and paint.

Can the Painting Be Shipped Directly to the Recipient?

International shipping is available.

Depending on the destination, size of the painting and current shipping conditions, an additional shipping charge may sometimes be necessary.
