A custom pet portrait can make a highly personal gift for someone whose dog, cat or other animal is an important part of their life.
I create original oil portraits from photographs, so the recipient receives a unique physical painting rather than a digital image or printed reproduction.
If you are considering a dog portrait gift, cat portrait gift or original animal painting for a birthday, Christmas, anniversary or another occasion, this guide explains how to plan the commission.
Is a Custom Pet Portrait a Good Gift?
For the right person, yes.
A commissioned painting is particularly suitable when the recipient has a strong relationship with a particular dog, cat, horse or other animal.
Unlike a generic animal print, the painting is based on an individual animal and created specifically for that person.
The final work is an original oil painting that can be framed, displayed and kept as part of the home.
Pet Portrait Gift Ideas
Birthday Gift
A portrait of a much-loved dog, cat or other animal can be a highly individual birthday present.
Christmas Gift
An original pet painting can work particularly well as a Christmas gift, provided enough time is allowed for painting and drying.
Anniversary or Family Gift
A portrait can commemorate an animal that has become strongly associated with a couple, family or particular period of their life.
Memorial Gift
When appropriate, an oil portrait can also be commissioned from photographs of an animal that is no longer alive.
Dog Portraits as Gifts
A custom dog portrait from a photo is one of the most natural forms of commissioned animal art.
Dogs often have very distinctive expressions, poses and habits that are immediately familiar to their owners.
If the portrait is a surprise, you can send me several photographs without involving the recipient. I can help decide which image has the strongest potential as a painting.
Cat Portraits as Gifts
A custom cat portrait can work equally well as a gift.
The best reference photograph does not necessarily need to be formal. A natural pose, expression or characteristic body language may tell me much more about the cat than a technically perfect photograph.
If possible, send several images so I can compare them before recommending a composition.
Can Other Animals Be Painted as a Gift?
Yes. I am open to commissions involving other animals when suitable photographs are available.
Depending on the reference material, this can include horses and other companion or domestic animals.
If you are looking for a custom animal portrait, animal painting, animal artwork or original oil painting as a gift, send me the photographs first and I will tell you whether they are suitable.
How Do You Order a Pet Portrait as a Surprise?
The recipient does not need to know about the commission.
If possible, include different angles and expressions.
I can help identify the strongest reference for the painting.
I can recommend a suitable format if you are uncertain.
This is especially important for Christmas, birthdays or another fixed date.
How Do I Choose the Right Photograph?
The photograph is one of the most important decisions in a portrait commission.
A useful reference should give me enough information about the animal’s expression, proportions, colouring and character.
You do not need a professional studio photograph.

What Size Pet Portrait Should I Give as a Gift?
This depends on the number of animals, composition and where you expect the painting to be displayed.
A smaller format can work extremely well for one close portrait, while several pets or a landscape setting usually benefit from more space.
How Much Does a Custom Pet Portrait Gift Cost?
My smaller custom oil pet portraits currently start at approximately $250 / €230.
The final cost depends mainly on the canvas size, number of animals and complexity of the composition.

How Early Should I Order a Pet Portrait for Christmas or a Birthday?
As early as reasonably possible.
A traditional oil painting requires not only painting time but also sufficient drying time before it can be packed safely.
My commission schedule can also vary throughout the year.
I can confirm whether the proposed deadline is realistic before we begin.
Can You Paint a Pet That Has Passed Away?
Often, yes.
Older photographs can frequently be used for a memorial commission, particularly when several images of the same animal are available.
If the portrait is intended as a memorial gift, send me all the photographs you can find. I can assess which references contain enough useful information.
Can You Change the Background?
In many cases, yes.
Distracting objects can sometimes be simplified or removed, and a different surrounding environment may be possible when suitable reference material exists.
The final composition is discussed before I begin the painting.
Is It an Original Painting or a Print?
It is painted individually and is not an AI-generated portrait, digital filter or printed reproduction.
For me, the photograph is the starting point rather than the finished product. I interpret the animal through composition, colour, light and paint.
Can the Painting Be Shipped Directly to the Recipient?
International shipping is available.
Depending on the destination, size of the painting and current shipping conditions, an additional shipping charge may sometimes be necessary.
Send me the destination country or postal code together with the approximate painting size and I can confirm whether an additional shipping charge will apply.
If the portrait is being sent as a gift, tell me the required destination and deadline when discussing the commission.
