Description
Original skull and paintbrush still life
In the Studio
A skull, a worn collection of paintbrushes, books and a red rose
come together in this dark studio still life — part self-portrait
of a working space, part contemporary vanitas.

A still life from my own studio
Unlike a constructed historical vanitas, In the Studio
grew directly from objects around me in the place where I paint.
The brushes are my working brushes, gathered in a blue studio pot,
and the surrounding objects belong naturally to that environment.
The skull introduces the traditional memento mori association, but
I was equally interested in the painting as a record of the studio:
worn tools, books, colour and objects accumulated around the daily
process of painting.
The skull and the brushes create two very different vertical
rhythms — one solid and pale, the other fragmented into dozens
of thin marks — against a deep red studio background.
Skull, brushes and red ground
The skull occupies the lower part of the composition, with its
light surface emerging strongly against the darker surroundings.
Behind it, the blue brush pot creates the principal colour contrast
against the warm red-brown background.
I kept the individual brushes loose and varied. Their stained
handles and irregular tips are not arranged as pristine studio
equipment; they are working objects that have accumulated paint
through repeated use.
A red rose near the lower edge adds another traditional vanitas
association, while books and smaller studio objects remain partly
absorbed into the darker side of the painting.
Please note: frame not included.
The decorative black and gold frame visible in the photographs
is shown for presentation and scale only. The painting is sold
unframed.
Contemporary vanitas
A skull and fading flower connect the painting with the
traditional imagery of mortality and passing time.
Real studio objects
The paintbrushes and objects come from the artist’s working
studio rather than a decorative staged setting.
Painterly surface
Visible strokes, broken edges and changes in paint thickness
remain part of the finished image.
