These Kazimierz Dolny oil paintings focus on three different encounters with the town’s historic architecture: a steep monastery entrance, a shadowed arcade and a tightly enclosed corner near the Small Market.
Kazimierz Dolny is a town where architecture and landscape are difficult to separate. White walls climb the slopes, rooflines overlap, narrow passages open unexpectedly, and trees cut into the silhouettes of churches, houses and courtyards.
I approach these buildings through light, mass and surface rather than precise architectural documentation. Old plaster, dark gateways, steep stairs and tightly compressed streets give the town its distinctive visual character.

Kazimierz Dolny — Franciscan Monastery
The first composition is built around ascent. The staircase rises toward the dark entrance, while the monastery walls, roofs and trees continue the movement toward the upper part of the painting.
The strongest contrast appears between the pale architecture and the almost black opening of the gate. The stairs, sloping wall and small tiled roofs create a sequence of diagonals that keeps the image active.
The recognisable building provides the subject, but the painting is held together by the staircase, the dark gate and the pressure of sunlight against white walls.View the Painting
Kazimierskie Podcienie — Light Inside Historic Architecture
Instead of presenting a complete facade, this painting concentrates on a passage: white walls, a heavy arch, a small window, a hanging lantern and a bright opening at the far end.
At close range, the architecture becomes almost abstract. The arch acts as a dense dark mass surrounded by broken whites, cool greys and a narrow strip of blue sky.
Thick paint gives the plaster physical weight. The wall is not a flat white surface but a mixture of cool reflection, warm light, damaged edges and uneven layers.

Stara Synagoga — A Quiet Corner Near the Small Market
The former synagogue is not shown as a formal frontal monument. The painting focuses on a narrow corner where roofs, walls and passages press closely against one another.
Charcoal-grey timber, white stone, a red-orange central structure and intense blue sky create the main colour relationships. A small area of greenery brings life into the dense arrangement.
The enclosed space is essential to the painting. The buildings overlap, cast shadows across one another and form an intimate urban interior rather than a wide panoramic view.
