A contemporary vanitas painting
Still Life with a Skull — belongs to the long tradition
of vanitas painting, in which the skull becomes a direct reminder
of mortality and the passing of time.
Rather than building the composition from numerous symbolic
objects, I reduced it almost entirely to the skull, folds of deep
red fabric and surrounding darkness. The restricted arrangement
allows the light falling across the bone to become the central
event of the painting.
The pale skull is not isolated against a neutral background.
It appears from layers of dark red cloth and shadow, allowing
warm colour and near-black passages to surround the lightest
form in the painting.
Skull, red drapery and shadow
I was particularly interested in the contrast between the dry,
pale colour of the skull and the warmer reds surrounding it.
The drapery is deliberately loose, with broad folds disappearing
into darkness rather than being described evenly across the whole
surface.
The skull itself remains recognisable without becoming an
anatomical study. Some passages are sharply defined while others
dissolve into shadow, keeping the image closer to painting than
illustration.
